A record-setting stint in college wasn’t enough to impress NFL scouts. Tracy White might have made 500 tackles at Howard, but the NFL deemed him unworthy of a draft choice.
White, though, has found a way to stick around. The reserve linebacker has become a key special teams player for Green Bay, already recovering one fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and recovering another that led to a score.
“Tracy is the heartbeat of our special teams,” Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said. “He was our No. 1 performer on special teams [last year] and he’s off to an excellent start this year. I would think Washington would have a target on him. He has it all: he has speed; he has quickness; he has an excellent nose for the ball.”
White made Seattle’s roster as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He spent two years with the Seahawks, another with Jacksonville and is now in his second season in Green Bay.
“I’ve played special teams since I got in the league,” White told the Milwaukee Journal, “and now, I finally see. Instead of thinking of special teams as an I’ve-just-got-to-do-it thing, it’s my job now. So my goal is to get to the Pro Bowl.”
