Redskins acquire WR Gaffney for Jarmon

The Redskins traded former third-round pick Jeremy Jarmon to Denver in exchange for receiver Jabar Gaffney. Jarmon, entering his third season, was nearly cut last summer and, according to one executive, had been shopped around.

Jarmon is considered a better fit in a 4-3, which the Redskins were playing when they selected him in the supplemental draft two years ago. Denver plays  a 4-3.

Gaffney, 30, is coming off a 65-catch, 875-yard season. In 2009, he caught 54 passes for 732 yards. In nine seasons, Gaffney has made 88 starts and caught 375 passes for 4,675 yards and 19 touchdowns. Gaffney was drafted by Houston and played three seasons with New England before joining Denver in 2009.

Gaffney said he found out about the trade after a team meeting.

“It shocked me,” Gaffney said of the trade. “I didn’t have any clue that it was going to happen.”

He said of the offense, “I’ll try to pick it up as fast as I can.” As for John Beck, Gaffney said, “I have to get to know a lot more about him.”

The Redskins signed receiver Donte Stallworth earlier Wednesday and drafted three wideouts in April. They have 13 on the roster.
