Jim Williams: Pucks, hoops replace balls, strikes

As the Orioles? season comes to an end this weekend, the Capitals are getting ready to start next week and the Wizards? season is about a month away, so Baltimore sports fans will have something to watch between Ravens games.

Can?t get enough of No. 8 on the ice? No worries. All 82 regular-season Capitals games featuring Alex Ovechkin, recently dubbed the NHL?s best player by The Sporting News, can be seen on local TV this season.

What about Agent Zero? Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards will clock in with at least 79 games, and that number is likely to jump to 81 once the NBA?s national schedule is finalized.

The Caps …

Comcast SportsNet will broadcast 56 games ? CN8 will handle as many as 23 games, depending on contests that could be picked up nationally. Every Caps? home game on CSN will be available in HD. The Caps have one of the NHL?s best broadcast teams with Joe Beninati and former Cap Craig Laughlin in the booth and Al Koken reporting rink-side. Koken joins former Cap Joe Reekie for “Caps Post Game Live” following games on CSN.

The Wiz …

CSN will broadcast 54 games, with at least 38 in HD. As many as 25 are slated for CN8. Hoops fans will be happy to hear the talented and popular team of Emmy Award-winning Steve Buckhantz (play-by-play commentator) and former Bullets great Phil Chenier (color analyst) is returning. This is Buck?s 10th season calling Wizards games and Chenier?s 22nd.

So get some more batteries for the remote. More good sports are on the way.

Sandusky passes first test …

WBAL/98 Rock play-by-play man Gerry Sandusky passed the first test as NFL broadcaster. His call of Matt Stover?s clutch kick to beat Cleveland was just right. He set it up without making it sound like the biggest kick in Ravens? history and then called it with good drama but without being over the top. It is the less-is-more theory that separates the good play-by-play men from the many bad ones.
