Ravens set for start of minicamp

The Ravens will hold a rookie minicamp this weekend at their Owings Mills? headquarters, bringing together their draft picks and undrafted free agents.

The Ravens confirmed Thursday that each of the team?s selections from the recent National Football League draft are expected to be in camp.

The team had not officially released the names of the undrafted free agents, pending their completion of team physicals and contract signings.

The rookies will go through two different practices on Saturday and Sunday.

The minicamp will not be open to the public.

First-round pick Haloti Ngata, a defensive tackle from the University of Oregon, was described by Ravens? director of scouting Eric DeCosta as a “big block of granite,” and will likely be this weekend?s headliner.

Second-rounder Chris Chester, an Oklahoma offensive lineman, is a former tight end who made the switch to the line in his senior season.

“His maturity increased, and we see a guy with tremendous potential long-term todevelop into an outstanding NFL lineman,” DeCosta said.

Defensive back David Pittman, taken in the third round, will make the move from Division I-AA Northwestern State to the NFL. Defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said: “Obviously, it?s going to be a huge step up, but it?s going to be a huge step up for anybody.”

Demetrius Williams, the team?s fourth-round selection and Ngata?s college teammate, could be a steal. He might push Devard Darling and Clarence Moore for playing time.

“I think it?s going to very hard to keep him off the field this year, even though he?s competing with the two other guys,” Baltimore general manger Ozzie Newsome said.

One of the most interesting positions to watch in the next couple of months will be punter. The Ravens signed veteran Leo Araguz recently, but they also drafted Nebraska?s Sam Koch in the sixth round.

“The nice thing about Sam is that he also kicks off,” said DeCosta, who added that Koch kicked off for the Cornhuskers in 2003.
