When the Giants come to Fed Ex Field to face the Redskins today it is the main national game for FOX starting at 4:15pm. Sitting in the broadcast booth will be Joe Buck and his partner Troy Aikman with Pam Oliver on the sidelines. That means a national audience will see the 2-0 Redskins play for the second time in three weeks and Aikman admits that he is a bit surprised.
Aikman on the fast start by the Redskins: “To tell you the truth I though the Redskins were going to be better than last year but after two games I see a vastly improved team. They won a close game at home against the Dolphins in overtime and then followed that up by going to Philly and beating the Eagles. The defense shows great improvement and the offense is maturing each week under Jason Campbell.”
Aikman on Jason Campbell: “Jason is improving every week and he has impressed me with his poise. Everyone knows he has the arm to put the ball anywhere on the field he wants he just needs to find the touch but that will come. The TD pass at the end of first half against the Eagles to Chris Cooley was a great pass and one that shows you his talent and poise under fire. He is learning how to look at his check downs and find a second or a third choice. Then he has shown some mobility and running only when it makes sense, that is key, he a passer first and runs only when he sees open space. That is the sign of a smart, gifted and maturing young QB.”
Aikman on the NFC East: “The East is the home of dynasties. You have the Cowboys, Redskins and Giants all multiple Super Bowl winners and while the Eagles have not won a Super Bowl they are constant threat and have made it to their share of NFC Championship Games. The rivalries are great I mean the Cowboys, Redskins, Giants and Eagles all hate each other and want to beat each other. Let me tell that when I was playing for the Cowboys that when you played an NFC East game the training room was full on Monday morning’s. It is also the premier conference in the NFC a few years back when the NFL was realigning the league was thinking of putting the Cowboys in either the South or the West and Jerry Jones went nuts he said that the Cowboys were part history in the NFC East and that history must stay alive and I totally agree.”
