Ishikawa in last place in PGA

19-year-old from Japan shoots 85, his worst round ever on PGA Tour

After his tie for fourth place in the WGC-Bridgestone, did you select Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa in your PGA pool? Hope not.

On Thursday in the opening-round of the PGA, Ishikawa shot the worst round of his career, a 15-over 85, and is in last place with roughly half of the field in the clubhouse. Ishikawa hit six shots in water hazards at Atlanta Athletic Club. On holes No. 15-18, the brutal finishing stretch, Ishikawa was eight-over, which included a triple-bogey at the 260-yard par-three 15th. Ishikawa, who started on the back nine, made the turn in 10-over (45). The round comes after Ishikawa broke 70 all four rounds last week at Firestone Country Club.

The 85 is the second worst round shot in a major this year. Craig Hinton shot 87 in the second round of the British Open. Former teen phenom Ty Tryon (84) had the worst round at the U.S. Open at Congressional.

It is the second straight major championship round where Ishikawa failed to break 80. He shot 80 in the second round of the British Open, failing to make the cut. It also is the worst round (out of 70) on the PGA Tour for the 19-year-old.

Midway through the PGA’s first round, only two other players failed to break 80 – PGA Tour rookie Tommy Gainey (81), and Connecticut club pro Danny Balin (81), a former soccer player at Rockville (Md.) High.
