Linebacker Foreman suspended for a year
Two days after suspending two basketball players for one year, the University of Maryland has taken the same action with one of its football players. Freshman linebacker Lukas Foreman of Naples, Fla. has been suspended for a year for violating the school’s student-athlete code of conduct.

Foreman (6-3, 205), a safety who was transitioning to linebacker this spring, redshirted last year. He struggled with the off-field transition as well. Maryland coach Randy Edsall revealed early this year that Foreman was the last player drafted in an off-season team building exercise in which players receive positive and negative points for a variety of workout and academic initiatives.
Consider it likely that Foreman will leave school, which would make him the 14th scholarship player to depart since the end of the Terps’ dismal 2-10 debut season of Edsall, and 26th player overall to leave since Edsall was hired in January of 2011.
In Wednesday’s press release, Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson used virtually the same quote as two days earlier announcing the one-year suspension of basketball players Terrell Stoglin, who has opted for the NBA Draft, and Mychal Parker, who had already announced his intention to transfer.
“Being a University of Maryland student-athlete carries a tremendous honor and responsibility,” Anderson said. “As much as we appreciate the effort this young man gave to the program this season, he was unable to live up to that responsibility. We’re certainly disappointed, but hope that he will use this as a learning experience.”
