A familiar name is atop the leaderboard after the first round 91st Maryland Open. Firing a 5-under-par 67 on Monday, four-time champion Chip Sullivan (Hanging Rock) leads by a shot over amateur Phillip Fenstermaker (Clearview) and professionals Jim Estes (Olney Golf park), and Charlie Winegardner (Old South). Play continues through Wednesday at Old South.
Others that are close include 2011 runner-up Sean Bosdosh (Holly Hills), who shot 69, and 2011 winner David Hutsell (Elkridge), who is among a group of eight players at 70.
The 47-year-old Sullivan, also former champion of the PGA Professional National Championship, finished Monday with an eagle 3 at the 549-yard closing hole to complete Old South’s four par-5 holes in 4-under. He is trying to become the second player to win five Maryland Open titles. Sullivan captured all of his titles in even-numbered years winning every other year, beginning in 2002. Former Indian Spring professional Charlie Bassler has the record for Maryland Open titles (seven), from 1948-65.
