Blackman takes over at Northwood

Reggie Blackmon is the new girls basketball coach at Northwood, he confirmed Thursday. Blackmon went 12-12 last year at Churchill in his first season as a varsity head coach before stepping down last month.

He wasn’t out of a job for long. Northwood athletic director Michael Wood is busy hiring coaches for the school’s first season of varsity sports. Last week, Wood announced the selection of Tony Dickens to guide the boys basketball program. Dickens took Northwestern to the 4A state championship in 2004, his last of three seasons at the Prince George’s County school.

Blackmon grew up in Georgia. He came to the Washington area to play basketball at Howard University. After a four-year career as a player with the Bison, he graduated in 1996. He works as a wellness manager in a retirement community.

“Not being a teacher, it’s not as easy to get a coaching job,” said Blackmon. “I didn’t know if I’d ever get the opportunity again. I’m grateful to be back coaching and excited about taking over a new program.”
