The Northern Region girls lacrosse quarterfinals feature an intriguing mix of championship programs, contenders and unknowns trying to make their mark for the first time. Here is a preview of tonight’s games.
Annandale (13-5) at No. 2 Oakton (12-2)
Oakton is playing as well as it did at any time last season when it lost a late lead and fell to W.T. Woodson in the Northern Region championship game. But it can’t take the Atoms lightly. Annandale, led by All-Examiner defender Marie Pierce, reached the region semifinals last year.
No. 3 Robinson (11-2) at No. 5 Lake Braddock (14-1)
The most anticipated game of the night pits two former Patriot District rivals against each other. The Rams won the first meeting of the year between the two teams, 10-6, on March 16. The Bruins, led by Patriot District co-player of the year Natalie West, have not lost a game since.
W.T. Woodson (12-6) at Yorktown (15-2)
The Patriots are a dangerous quarterfinalopponent for Woodson, which has won three of the last four region and unofficial state championships. Yorktown was impressive in an 11-3 win over Westfield on Tuesday. Woodson seniors Michaela Seigo and Michelle White and junior Mia Naccarato were each second-team all-region selections.
Loudoun Valley (15-2) at Langley (12-3)
Langley is lurking in a region where Lake Braddock, Oakton and Robinson have drawn much of the attention. The Saxons finally broke through with two one-goal wins over Woodson to take the Liberty District title. But Loudoun Valley, despite playing mostly a Group AA schedule, has proven itself with wins over Yorktown and Chantilly.
