Keys to the game
1. Attack the Chiefs » This is a good game to be aggressive as Kansas City’s offensive line has struggled as much as any in the NFL. The Chiefs also could be minus left tackle Branden Albert. Plus they lack receivers with burner speed, which means the corners should be able to handle them. So they need to be attack this offense, whether with stunts or blitzes. And they’d be wise to continue moving LB Brian Orakpo around, creating problems for Kansas City.
2. Protect Jason Campbell » The Redskins will start three linemen who probably would not start on most teams at their current position. That equals potential trouble. The coaching staff can help in a few ways. Washington will give both tackles help when they can against a team that will blitz. But the Redskins also should use more quick throws. Get something established first and keep the Chiefs’ rush off-balance. They also — broken record time — must establish the run, which also would help.
3. Beware the tricks » Kansas City coach Todd Haley is an offensive-minded and will call his share of trick plays. He did so against Dallas, using a flea flicker and a double reverse on consecutive plays. And no doubt they’ll try them when young guys like end Jeremy Jarmon are in the game. He’s been fooled before, as has Orakpo. It’s hard to imagine the Chiefs not trying to con them at least a few times Sunday.
Key matchups
Stephon Heyer • Redskins • LT » He’s not facing a stud, which will help. But he needs a near shutdown game.
vs.
Tamba Hali • Chiefs • LB » He’s starting to make plays in this 3-4 front, with two sacks and two forced fumbles.
Mike Williams • Redskins • RT » He’s powerful in the run game, but must show he can still block on the edge.
vs.
Mike Vrabel • Chiefs • LB » Smart veteran, but has lost a step. He hasn’t pressured the passer much, but is still capable.
Albert Haynesworth • Redskins • DT » Yes, he seems to get hurt a lot, but he also has been productive.
vs.
Brian Waters • Chiefs • LG » The 10-year veteran has made four Pro Bowls in the past five seasons.
State of the teams
CHIEFS » Kansas City is coming off its best showing; but the Chiefs know they could have won. Still, it represented progress. With a first-year coach, a new quarterback and a defense in transition, a long season lies ahead.
REDSKINS » The Redskins endured another week of intense scrutiny and it’s starting to wear on them. They remain upbeat and haven’t splintered as a team. But they need a win or times will get much tougher. They know it.
Examiner predicts
Washington is playing poorly; but the Chiefs are much worse. The Redskins’ defense is the best unit in this game — by far — and it will make the difference on a day when the weather could get ugly.
Redskins 17, Chiefs 10
