March Madness continues on your computer, TV, radio and cell phone

Lot’s of local interest in today’s games with four area teams playing in the Big Dance.

Things get underway at noon again today and there will be a number of people checking their computers or taking long lunches both in Washington and around Baltimore.

CBS 9 in DC, 13 in Baltimore and 5 in the Bay Area are the home of all things March Madness.

CBS play by play man Verne Lundquist will be doing the American – Tennessee game today at 12:15pm.

VL: “I think that the Jeff Jones, American University story is what the NCAA Tournament is all about. A good coach, a fine team making their first ever appearance in the tournament is what  makes college sports so awesome. I am also happy to see George Mason back, the game I did in Washington when they upset UCONN to make it the Final Four was one of the most memorable moments of my career.”

JW: Who do you think will win it all?

VL: “There are five or six really good teams out there but if I had to pick one I would have to say UCLA. They have been here before and they might just be the most complete team in the tournament.”

UMBC faces Georgetown today at 2:30pm on CBS 9 DC, 13 Baltimore and 5 in the Bay Area the home of the all the tournament action. All
Georgetown
games can be heard on WTEM – 980AM with a pre game at 2pm.

CBS Sports lead analyst Billy Packer is broadcasting his 34th NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. He and partner Jim Nantz will be calling the action on both the UMBC-Georgetown game as well as the

Mount St.

Mary’s –
North Carolina
game from
Raleigh

I spoke to him about the local teams and the Big Dance in general and yes he knows what UMBC stands for and where it is located. Packer not only knows his basketball he also does his homework.

JW: Can Georgetown return to the Final Four?

BP: “Yes, but this year the field is very, very deep. If the Hoyas can put together a six game run playing their very best basketball with Roy Hibbert dominating the boards and solid guard play from Jeremiah Rivers, Jessie Sapp and Jonathan Wallace controlling the tempo of the games then yes the Hoyas are as good as anyone.”

JW: You said last Sunday on the NCAA Selection Show that this is the most open the tournament has been in more than ten years. Why?

BP: “Look at the power conferences this year. The ACC, the PAC 1O, Big East, Big 12, and SEC in each case the top two teams in each conference were very evenly matched. Then you look at those same conferences and the teams who were 3 through 6 were also evenly matched. Just look at the ACC you had UNC and Duke at the top of the league with
Clemson
,
Maryland
, Virginia Tech and
Miami
all very much in the race to the end. That is what we see when we look at the NCAA Tournament, the teams who are seeded #1 and #2 are almost interchangeable and the #3 through #6 teams are all solid so I could make case for at least 8 teams to be the National Champion and that has not been the case in quiet a while.”
