So Capitals prospect Philipp Grubauer is off to a strong start. The 19-year-old was named the ECHL goalie of the week for Oct. 31-Nov. 6 after posting a 3-0 record for the South Carolina Stingrays with a shutout and a .960 save percentage.
His play is a big reason the Stingrays are leading the ECHL with an 8-3 record. Grubauer stopped 24 of 25 shots in a 4-1 win over Florida last Tuesday. He then stopped all 26 shots he faced against Toledo. Ended the week with 22 more saves on 24 shots against Reading.
Grubauer, Washington’s fourth-round draft pick in 2010, is a native of Rosenheim, Germany. He slots in nicely behind Michal Neuvirth, 23, and Braden Holtby, 22, on the list of young goalies in the organization. Overall, he is 6-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage. Entering play Tuesday, Grubauer was tied for the ECHL lead in save percentage and was second in wins and goals-against.
