If it looks like a Duck, it must be good

We’re five weeks into the college football season, and all of the top 10 teams in the latest AP Top 25 poll are undefeated. That won’t hold up over the next month, so which of these teams are legitimate BCS contenders?

Oregon » The popular T-shirts on campus proclaim “Return of the Quack.” The Ducks certainly have done their part to fulfill the prophecy. Oregon — behind dynamic quarterback Darron Thomas, fleet-footed LaMichael James and a stable of receivers — is averaging 56.6 points a game. The Ducks hung 28 on Stanford in the second half Saturday in a 52-31 win. Contender

Oklahoma » It hasn’t been pretty, but the Sooners are 5-0 after outlasting Texas 28-20 on Saturday. Oklahoma, aside from a blowout win over Florida State, hasn’t exactly been setting the country aflame, squeaking by Utah State, Air Force and Cincinnati. Landry Jones has been very good statistically, throwing for 11 touchdowns against only three interceptions, but OU continually lets teams hang around late. Pretender

Arizona » The idle Wildcats watched Pac-10 rivals USC and Stanford give up a combined 84 points in respective losses to Washington and Oregon on Saturday. After its 34-27 win over Iowa in Week 3 — and after Stanford was completely shelled by Oregon — it’s not a stretch to pin Arizona as the second-best team in the conference. Contender
