2010 College football Week 11 games to watch

LOCAL GAMES

Virginia Tech at North Carolina

Players to watchJustin HoustonControversy is swirling around Auburn QB Cam Newton. On Saturday, Houston — Georgia’s top pass-rusher — will be swirling around him as well. The DE/LB (16 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 40 hurries) and the Bulldogs (5-5) travel to No. 2 Auburn with a chance to make something of their lost season. (Sat., 3:30 p.m., CBS)Shane VereenThe California RB has scored 15 touchdowns rushing and receiving, doing a reasonable impersonation of Jhavid Best. He and the inconsistent Golden Bears (5-4), who have lost QB Kevin Riley for the season, will have to bring their best stuff to challenge No. 1 Oregon. (Sat., 7:30 p.m., Versus)Vick BallardWith six straight wins, No. 17 Mississippi State (7-2) has become a factor in the SEC the old fashioned way — by running the ball and playing defense. At No. 10 Alabama, Ballard (619 yards rushing, 12 TD) and the Bulldogs will face the SEC’s gold standard of physical play. (Sat., 7:15 p.m., ESPN2)Daniel ThomasThe Kansas State RB (1,102 yards rushing) had much to do with the No.  23 Wildcats (6-3) becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2006. Thomas will have to be at his best at Missouri, a team the Wildcats last beat in 2005 in coach Bill Snyder’s final game at KSU. (Sat., 12:30 p.m.)Dan PersaThe Northwestern QB got the Wildcats (6-3) bowl eligible before October was over. But he has yet to deliver an upset. It hasn’t been for lack of trying as Northwestern has led in the second half of each of its three defeats. The next challenge comes at home against No. 14 Iowa. (Sat., noon, ESPN)
