Injury bug bites Springs; Skins sign Posey

One day after finding out their leading rusher would miss the preseason, the Redskins learned a similar fate about a defensive standout.

Corner Shawn Springs will miss three to six weeks, putting him in jeopardy for at least the first two games of the regular season. Springs underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a minor tear in an abdominal muscle in Durham, N.C.

The injury had bothered Springs for a while, but it wasn’t until he got it checked out Tuesday that they realized how bad it had been.

Springs, who has started the past two seasons, will be replaced by Kenny Wright. Reserve corner Ade Jimoh remains sidelined with a sternum injury. Wright has started 47 games in seven seasons, but struggled in his Redskins’ debut Sunday against Cincinnati.

The Redskins traded for fifth-year corner Mike Rumph on Monday. Rumph, who did not practice Tuesday, has played in just five games the past two seasons because of injuries.

Also, the Redskins signed veteran linebacker Jeff Posey, released last week by Buffalo. Posey played one seasons under current Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams in Buffalo. He can play inside and outside linebacker as well as rush end. He has 20 1/2 career sacks.

The Redskins waived injured linebacker Chris Clemons, who sprained his knee Sunday.
