Hardly a day goes by in which Dave Johnson has only one assignment. No matter whether he is at home in Washington or on the road in Los Angeles, the sports director of WTOP-FM never misses doing his morning drive sports reports. He handles the play-by-play duties for the Wizards on 106.7 The Fan, and he is the television voice of D.C. United. He also serves as a fill-in anchor at Comcast SportNet.
How do you juggle all of the jobs?
Johnson » “Well, it all begins with great employers. WTOP has been wonderful allowing me to do both the Wizards and D.C. United. I take some equipment with me on the road, and it allows me do the morning drive sports reports on WTOP. The cool thing is the equipment allows me to sound just like I am sitting in studio no matter where I am on the road. As for the Wizards and D.C. United, both organizations have allowed me to be creative in my scheduling to make things work.”
How tough has it been doing the Wizards games?
Johnson » “This is my fifth year working on Wizards radio with Glenn Consor, and look, it is always more fun to do games with winning teams. However, this team has some good young players like John Wall, JaVale McGee, Jan Vesely and Trevor Booker, [who] are all great building blocks. We know how Ted Leonsis built the Capitals into one of the most successful teams in the NHL through the draft and good free agents. I think we are seeing the same template.”
