Berry would fit but likely won’t be picked

The Redskins hosted Tennessee safety Eric Berry on Wednesday (and are doing so again Thursday), but don’t read too much into that. Yet. Teams can bring in 20 players to work out, and sometimes they do it for future reference.

The Redskins have other screaming needs. But Berry would fit. If the Redskins use a lot of three-safety sets, they need one who can cover in the slot — something LaRon Landry absolutely can’t do. Berry can.

“I’ve long thought he’s among the top three players in the draft,” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said. “I don’t think the comparison to Ed Reed is that far off.”

However, the Sporting News’ War Room, a compilation of former NFL scouts, offers a different take.

Their evaluation: “We were shocked at how few plays he was involved in from [safety]. … He has rare athleticism, but we are confident he will struggle at safety. However, he has everything it takes to be an elite cornerback.”
