Entering the final week of the regular season, two boys soccer teams are undefeated: Perennial contender, defending Patriot District champion and Northern Region favorite Lake Braddock — and Washington-Lee.
“I’m assuming it’s one of the best records the program has had in a long, long time if not the best record ever,” said Generals seventh-year coach Jimmy Carrasquillo.
Washington-Lee (10-0-2, 4-0-1 National District) established itself with a 0-0 tie against Hayfield in March, and it was pummeling district foes by four-goal margins before fate was tempted in a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over Jefferson.
“After they scored, we were like, ‘We can’t lose.’ It didn’t feel real,” said senior defender Duy Nguyen. “But we squeaked out with a win and our team is lot better now.”
“They’re playing with a ton of energy and a ton of passion,” said Colonials coach Sean Burke. “When they won they we’re flying high. That’s what it’s supposed to be about. They’re on a mission.”
Senior forward Mijael Vargass leads the team with eight goals but he’s not the only scoring threat for a team that’s outscored opponents, 38-6. Seniors Jorge Ramirez and Igor Alba and sophomore Davis Rodrigues all have five goals. Alba had his best game of season on Friday, a hat trick in a 5-1 win over Wakefield.
The Generals could clinch the district title and No. 1 seed in the Northern Region tournament with a win over Falls Church tonight.
“The boys know what’s at stake. It would be our first district championship in 11 years,” said Carrasquillo. “They understand how special this season is.”
