Sparrows Point High graduate Gary Kendall is the manager and Brandon Erbe, from McDonogh, is one of the team?s top pitchers.
But the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds have another area product on the team this season. Chorye Spoone, a right-handed pitcher, is from Pasadena and played two years at Catonsville Community College.
He improved to 5-1 with a win on Wednesday. His ERA is 2.18 in nine starts, with 26 strikeouts, 33 hits allowed and 30 walks in 41.1 innings.
Spoone, 20, was taken in the eighth round by the Orioles in the 2005 draft. In his first pro season, with Bluefield (WV) in the rookie Appalachian League, Spoone was 2-5 with an ERA of 8.03 in 15 games, with three starts.
He threw 24.2 innings, and allowed 27 hits (three homers) with 13 walks and 27 strikeouts.
Spoone was promoted to the full-season South Atlantic League this year with the Shorebirds, who are based in Salisbury on the Eastern Shore.
“It is great. At first I didn?t expect this opportunity,” said Spoone, a graduate of Northeast High.
“He has a very live and very strong arm,” said David Stockstill, the director of minor league operations for the Orioles. “He can hit 96 (miles per hour). He is still somewhat raw. His consistentcy comes and goes.”
