Hankerson tears labrum, out for season

The Redskins injury situation just got worse: receiver Leonard Hankerson tore the labrum in his right hip and will miss the rest of the season. Hankerson injured his hip in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 20-9 loss to Miami.

Hankerson will see a specialist to determine if surgery is needed, but Shanahan said it’s typically a four-month rehabilitation period.

“He played a great game and had a big upside,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “I liked the way he handled hismelf and the way he worked. He was devastated when he found out.”

Hankerson, a third-round pick, caught eight passes for 106 yards in his second start. He had developed a strong rapport with quarterback Rex Grossman in their one game together.

Shanahan said Hankerson grew from the time he came to camp, when coaches told him he needed to take a more “professional” approach.

“You could see a light go on and you could see his competitiveness on the scout team, which gave him an opportunity to start,” Shanahan said. “And you could see how he turned it up the field and caught big-time balls and never broke stride. That’s what you look for.”

Meanwhile, defensive end Kedric Golston suffered a third degree MCL tear and a partial tear of his ACL in his knee.

Also, Shanahan said right tackle Jammal Brown is a “longshot” to return vs. Dallas. Brown has a groin injury.
