Redskins notes

»  Redskins coach Jim Zorn said he hasn’t decided on which receiver will be the No. 2 wideout opposite Santana Moss. Malcolm Kelly started there vs. Pittsburgh while Devin Thomas got the start vs. Baltimore.

Kelly has been more productive with five catches for 47 yards compared to Thomas’ two catches for 19 yards. Antwaan Randle El also is a possibility, though the Redskins seem to like him as a slot receiver rather than as a flanker, which is what the No. 2 guy would play.

“Whoever performs is who will get the No. 2 spot,” Kelly said.

Kelly, coming off a season of knee problems, said he’s a different receiver now.

“When I line up I have a plan now instead of running and hoping I get open,” he said. “Now I know what I’m doing and I’m able to do it full speed. It makes a difference.”

He said he’s “10 times more explosive. Real, real explosive.”

»  Corner Carlos Rogers did not practice due to some swelling in his left calf that sidelined him for a week of camp earlier this summer. Rogers said he’s uncertain if he will practice Tuesday.

»  Zorn on the pressure applied by the defensive front and Albert Haynesworth in particular, “Albert didn’t get any sacks, but just to see the quarterback move away was music to my ears because as an offensive coach you want your quarterback to feel comfortable in there.”

Position Review

Running backs

Marcus Mason, 5-9, 215 pounds

For the second straight summer, Mason looks like a player who should earn a roster spot based on his numbers. He carried 11 times for 45 yards vs. Pittsburgh, showing patience and toughness.

However, for a second straight summer, Mason knows it won’t come down to his running.

“I have to show that I can do better on special teams,” said Mason, who spent time on the New York Jets active roster last season. “That’s tough when growing up you’re only playing running back and now being asked to make a tackle.”

Eddie Williams, 6-1, 249 pounds

Williams said his surgically-repaired knee is still not 100 percent, but he’s making progress as a player. Especially with his blocking. On the first day in full pads, the rookie fullback wasn’t moving defenders back with his blocks. He did so vs. Pittsburgh.

“In college I could mostly strong-arm people because the talent level is different,” he said. “Here it’s more technique-oriented. You have to get low and get your pads down and drive the guy. … That first padded practice I was like, ‘wow, why did that guy not move?’ I didn’t understand until I saw it on film and was like, ‘Oh, goodness look at me. I’m standing straight up.'”

Mike Sellers, 6-3, 273 pounds

Sellers did not practice Monday because of an injured right knee. However, Sellers is expected to play against New England Friday.

Against Pittsburgh, Sellers had one whiff of a block that enabled Ladell Betts to get stuffed at the goal line. However, Sellers also buried a Steelers linebacker on one block earlier in the series.

Player of note

Mike Williams, Tackle

Williams missed another practice with a sprained ankle, but did at least attend the workout and did light jogging during individual work. But Williams remains uncertain when he will return and if he’ll even be able to play vs. New England Friday. Williams hurt his ankle when he stepped on a teammate’s foot. This is yet another setback in his return to the NFL after not playing since 2005.
