Skins’ D too tough for Jets, 16-11

The Redskins showed once again what they have: a strong defense and questions about their running game.

Unlike previous seasons, the offense could actually contribute to a win, taking advantage of that defensive effort.

Larry Johnson scored on a 15-yard screen pass late in the fourth quarter to help Washington beat the New York Jets, 16-11. New York played its starters three quarters while the Redskins removed theirs after the second quarter.

Washington’s defense did have its issues vs. the run, which could be a problem worth watching. New York managed 125 first-half rushing yards, though the Jets only turned that into a field goal.

In three preseason games, the Redskins have allowed only 6 points in the first quarter and 21 in the first half. That includes a touchdown after a fake punt vs. Baltimore and a safety in Friday’s win.

Even though starting quarterback Donovan McNabb didn’t play, the Redskins had to have expected more from its offense. They managed just 22 yards rushing in the first half. Willie Parker, getting his first extended opportunity of the preseason, managed just 16 yards on eight carries – and not finding many holes behind the first-string line.

Starting back Clinton Portis carried the ball just one time for three yards as the Redskins try to determine who will be his backup. Larry Johnson managed 42 yards on nine carries, with 18 coming on a fourth-quarter run around right end. Keiland Williams had nine yards on three runs.

The starting offense accounted for two first-half field goals, led by quarterback Rex Grossman (eight for 16, 111 yards).

Graham Gano tied the game at 3 with 2:28 left in the first quarter on a 27-yard field goal. The 71-yard drive featured a 29-yard pass to Santana Moss to the Jets’ 27.

Gano’s 42-yard kick, set up by DeAngelo Hall’s interception and 35-yard return, gave Washington a 6-3 lead. Grossman had a shotgun snap skid off his hands in the end zone for a safety with two minutes left in the half.

Gano’s third field goal came from 41 yards in the third quarter.
