Tom Young helped Eddie Jordan reach the Final Four as a player. He later teamed with him to guide the Wizards to three straight playoff berths.
But their days together have ended. Young announced Thursday that he is retiring, ending his four-year stint as an assistant coach with Washington.
“I really enjoyed my coaching career, especially the last four seasons,” Young said. “It was great that I had the chance to be reunited with Eddie. I am proud of what we accomplished.”
Young, 74, coached Jordan at Rutgers, where they reached the 1976 Final Four. Young also coached at his alma mater, Maryland, as well as Catholic and American. Young played on an ACC Championship team at Maryland and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
“I learned a great deal about the game of basketball from Tom,” said Jordan. “I enjoyed playing under Tom and then having the opportunity to work with him later in my coaching career. Tom was a great resource and a valuable contributor.”
Meanwhile, the Wizards will continue their pre-draft workouts this morning, with Midwestern State center Eric Dawson, Pitt center Aaron Gray, Syracuse center Darryl Watkins and Tennessee center Major Wingate, who was dismissed from the team after he failed a third drug test and played instead in Turkey.
