Just as mock newsman Stephen Colbert’s entire act at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner was farcical, so, too, is his recollection of it.
In his new book, “I Am America (And So Can You!),” Colbert devotes an appendix to his 2006 speech, along with the “back story.”
Of meeting President Bush, he writes: “Then he extended the hand that signed off on ‘Shock and Awe.’ It was as soft as a mitten made from angel food cake. His eyes were steely, and he had the faraway look of a man who was replaying a video game in his mind.”
Colbert jokes that he wore his White House Correspondents Dinner tuxedo to the 2006 Emmy Awards. “After I lost I had it cremated and scattered over Barry Manilow.”
