Fox Sports Radio 1370AM ready for business
By: Jim Williams
The Examiner
Baltimore now has three all sports radio stations. Fox Sports Radio 1370AM has joined ESPN 1300AM and WNST 1570AM in the battle for the Baltimore sports fan.
For local boy Jerry Coleman this is a dream come true. He covered the Ravens for WBAL Radio and then went to Washington where he covered the Redskins for sports powerhouse WTEM Sports Talk 980AM. Now he is back in his hometown doing a Monday through Friday 3pm to 6pm drive-time talk show of his own and also serving as the station’s program director.
I spoke to Coleman about the new station.
Williams: Is there room for another sports talk radio station in Baltimore?
Coleman: “I think that there is and I really think that the Fox Sports Radio format is a perfect fit for this city. It is talk with an attitude, like Jim Rome and J.T. “The Brick” Baltimore sports fans like to call in and mix it up with their hosts. They like to challenge other cities and can talk sports with any fans in the country. Our goal is to have as many local shows as possible. But for now we think that as we grow fans will enjoy the Fox brand of sports talk. The key is patience we will get there in time and I know the fans will give us some time to grow. ”
Williams: What about your show?
Coleman: “It will be professional and not personal. By that I mean I will not sugar coat anything, I will tell the audience what I think about a topic. They can agree or chose to debate with me. I welcome debate and I promise that I will be prepared professional. I expect the callers to be ready to talk and have fun.”
Jerry Coleman is one of the best radio reporters in the business and thus far I have enjoyed his afternoon drive-time show. His Tuesday interview with former Orioles star Brady Anderson was great and it covered everything from how much fun he had playing baseball in Baltimore to steroids. Coleman’s reporting and interview skills are impressive so I would strongly recommend that you give him a listen and that also goes for The First Team on Fox with Steve Czaban the best morning drive – time show on radio from 6am till 9am. Give Fox Sports Radio 1370AM a listen and with 50,000 watts of daytime signal and 7500 watts of night time signal sports fans should have now trouble hearing the new sports offering all the way from Baltimore to D.C.
To call Jerry’s show the number is 410-481-1370
Billick spotting….
Former Ravens head coach Brian Billick will be back in the area this week. He will be doing color on the Redskins-Saints game for FOX and you can see him at 1pm. The game airs locally on FOX45 – WBFF-TV and FOX5 in Washington.
Redskins broadcasts start in Spanish this weekend…
The Washington Redskins will start broadcasting in Spanish starting this weekend on Red Zebra owned ESPN Deportes 730 (WXTR-AM). The new Spanish sports talk station will carry Washington Redskins game in Spanish, beginning this Sunday, September 14th when the Redskins play the New Orleans Saints at Fed Ex Field at 1pm. The ESPN Deportes 730 broadcast team will feature play- by- play anchor Raul Saenz and color commentary by Redskins analyst, Jorge Andres.
When asked for comment Bruce Gilbert, CEO of Red Zebra Broadcasting: “We are thrilled to offer the exciting Spanish radio play-by-play of Washington Redskins football on ESPN Deportes 730. It has been our goal to expand our sports brand to the rapidly growing Hispanic community. As the first all Spanish, all sports radio station in the market, ESPN Deportes 730 is the home for passionate sports talk, live choice soccer matches, and now the Washington Redskins with Raul and Jorge. This is truly a historic and proud moment for Red Zebra Broadcasting.”
