D.C. United head coach Curt Onalfo was quick to point out after today’s light training session that as of last Friday, there were ten different players out with injury. There are only 26 on the roster.
Julius James and Danny Allsopp didn’t participate today, instead just jogged on the side. Onalfo described them has having small muscle injuries. However, Juan Manuel Peña, Barry Rice, and Clyde Simms were all back in full participation. Only Simms seems likely to see the field in tomorrow night’s U.S. Open Cup play-in match against Dallas and likely only as a substitute, which he himself predicted last week.
It’s a mystery as to who else will be in the starting eleven. I explored the goalkeeper question – Bill Hamid or Troy Perkins – right here on Friday. Onalfo didn’t tip his hand, and even Hamid had no idea when I asked him right after practice if he was going to get the nod.
With James out, don’t be surprised if Devon McTavish slides into central defense. Who then takes over at right back? Hmmmm, perhaps Jordan Graye? As for the attackers, I have no clue whatsoever, but Adam Cristman looked sharp in training. And Christian Castillo did return from his weekend trip back to El Salvador, in case there was any worry.
