The little victory wasn’t celebrated, or even mentioned. Redskins kicker John Hall survived the first week of camp, and the first scrimmage, without a leg injury. Or even the hint of one.
After missing 14 combined games because of leg injuries the past two seasons, it’s a start.
Now Hall has to show he can still kick.
Though he missed two field goals in a scrimmage last weekend against Baltimore, Hall is not facing anymake-or-break type situation with the Redskins. Unless, that is, the struggles continue.
“One for three ain’t gonna cut it,” special teams coach Danny Smith said after the scrimmage. “But I love the guy; he’ll have a great year.”
Both Hall and the Redskins are convinced as long as he’s healthy, there’s nothing to worry about. Unproven Tyler Jones is his only competition in camp.
And Hall wasn’t fretting about the missed 47- and 46-yarders last weekend.
“You guys keep bringing it up, I’ve forgotten about it,” Hall said. “We should all move on. I don’t deal with the past, I deal with the present.”
When healthy, Hall is a reliable, kicker. He’s made 74 percent of kicks in his career.
But, for example, the top 12 kickers last season all made at least 76 percent of their kicks. And the top 10 all made at least 80 percent. Hall has accomplished that once in his career while playing a full season.
In six games last year, he did make 12 of 14 kicks, with a long of 45.
“I feel real comfortable with a veteran guy who has kicked a bunch of game-winners,” Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said.
Kickoffs are the injury culprit and something the Redskins hope he doesn’t have to do. But that depends on who wins the punting job.
“Right now, it’s about getting confident in my body,” said Hall, who did yoga this offseason. “Injuries play with your mind because you think you’re in good shape and something goes on you. Every day I get more confident in what I can do and I turn up the intensity.”
