Campbell helps Patriots ward off Pirates, 57-54

George Mason senior swingman Folarin Campbell scored 16 points as the Patriots held off Hampton, 57-54 Wednesday night at Patriot Center.

Campbell, who had been benched midway through the first half of an upset loss to East Carolina on Sunday at Verizon Center, added five assists and five rebounds to help George Mason improve to 7-2.

The Patriots led by as many as 11 points before halftime, but the Pirates (4-4) pressured their way back after the break, forcing the Patriots into 20 turnovers on the way to tying things at 47 on a 3-point play by Rashad West (game-high 22 points) with 8:29 remaining.

Campbell, who missed part of the second half with a twisted ankle, broke the deadlock with 6:14 left in the game and then clinched the victory with a 3-pointer at the 1:57 mark. He also notched his 300th career assist.

The Patriots also got 12 points from John Vaughan and eight points and 11 rebounds from Will Thomas.
