Some House Freshmen Off to Slow Start

The 110th Congress already is nearly six months old, but one freshman member has yet to file any legislation.

Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., has failed to sponsor a single bill so far this year. And no bills apparently equals no comment: When contacted by Yeas & Nays last week, Clarke’s press secretary, Chic Smith, said, “We have no comment on any bill sponsoring at all.”

Eight other freshmen have sponsored only one or two bills during their five months in office, and many of those proposals won’t set the legislative world on fire.

The first proposal in office by Rep. David Davis, R-Tenn., was H.RES.341, asking others to join him in “Supporting the goals and ideals of ‘American Eagle Day.’ ”

Rep. David Loebsack, D-Iowa, proposed naming a courthouse and congratulating one of his constituents, Zach Johnson, for winning the Masters golf tournament.
