Billick refutes recent Ogden retirement rumors

A local radio station reported Monday that Ravens offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden was mulling retirement following the death of his father two weeks ago. Ogden, a potential Hall of Famer, has yet to take part in a training camp workout.

But according to head coach Brian Billick, he has not gotten any hints that Ogden?s career is over.

“No, none whatsoever,” Billick said Tuesday at McDaniel College. “We talked to Jonathan, and he?s got some things to sort out. We?ve got to give him the appropriate time. It?s probably not a bad thing he has missed the time he has. Now, he can come in fresh and be ready to go. Certainly, he?s got to be mentally right and emotionally right for him. But I?ve had no conversation with anybody, Jonathan included, that has intimated that at all.”

Georgia Tech grads make the grade: When the Ravens drafted safety Dawan Landry and running back P.J. Daniels out of Georgia Tech in April, the organization was hoping at least one of the two could contribute. Both have stood out so far. Billick said Daniels has been impressive as a backup running back and special teams player.

“Yeah, he?ll make mistakes, but he?s got a firm understanding of what we?re doing,” Billick said. “He?s getting better and better.”

Landry is getting time with the first team at the safety position. He is covering receivers well and dealing with both the run and the pass like a seasoned pro.

“He?s doing well,” Billick said. “As I said the other day, it?s pleasantly surprising. This is not too big for him, and you think [it would be] for a young rookie. So far, so good.”

Star of the day: Most observers scoffed when Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said there were two quarterbacks in the building back in April ? before the trade for Steve McNair. Certainly, then-incumbent Kyle Boller was still with the team, but no one took Brian St. Pierre seriously. The four-year veteran is acquitting himself nicely so far and has made rookie free agent Drew Olson less of a presence each day.

Injury report: Clarence Moore remains on the sideline nursing his sports hernia. First-round pick Haloti Ngata (knee strain) is a possibility for Friday?s preseason game with the Giants. Third-round pick David Pittman is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
