Injury report; Williams says he could be effective

Left tackle Trent Williams said he’s still battling his high ankle sprain, which he said he tweaked again Thursday. But he also said at some point he’s just going to have to play on it, even through pain.

“I came to terms with that,” he said. “It’s up to coach how much he wants me to play through.”

There’s a chance that could happen this week when the Redskins hos the 49ers. Williams said he’s about 75 percent recovered, but he has not been ruled out. He’ll likely be a game-time decision.

However, there’s also a good chance that rookie Maurice Hurt will start at left guard with Will Montgomery returning to center. Hurt would have a better chance for success if in-between Montgomery and Williams rather than Sean Locklear.

“I feel if I had to go that I could go out there and be effective,” Williams said. “But I don’t know how good a 75 percent me is over a 100-percent Sean and I don’t want to be selfish. I want to play, but I want to help the team also.”

Williams was limited in practice this week and said there were setbacks both Wednesday and Thursday.

“Every day it’s something,” he said. “You feel every little dent in the ground with a bad ankle. I tweaked it but I kept practicing. It ain’t held me out too much but I don’t know how much confidence it gives [the coaches].”

As for Hurt’s progress since the summer, coach Mike Shanahan said, “He’s very sharp and he’s adjusted very quickly. He works extremely hard but there’s so many things involved. We’re impressed with how hard he’s worked.”

…The rest of the injury report: RB Tashard Choice (hamstring) and WR Santana Moss (hand) are out; Williams, FS Oshiomogho Atogwe (toe, knee), CB Phillip Buchanon (neck/knee) and TE Fred Davis (ankle) are questionable. Atogwe did not practice while the others were limited. Davis said he expects to play.

“I should be good,” Davis said.

Atogwe said both his knee and toe are still bothering him.

“It’s not a pain thing, it’s to where it’s not allowing me to do the things I love to do in the way I’m used to,” he said.

Atogwe said his hamstring is healed.

…For San Francisco: DT Ray McDonald (hamstring) is out; RB Moran Morris (fibula) is questionable. McDonald is playing well and a reason why their defensive front seven has been strong this season.
