BCS contenders have stumbling blocks ahead

With the utmost respect to Houston and Kansas State, upset losses by Wisconsin and Oklahoma last weekend trimmed the cast of undefeated national championship contenders to six. But look at their schedules, and it’s clear one-loss BCS chaos may still lurk just around the corner: No. 6 Clemson (8-0) » Three of the Tigers’ final four are on the road, including a finale at South Carolina. The ACC is pulling for them, but their in-state SEC rival may be their undoing.

No 5. Boise State (7-0) » TCU, even with two losses (one by two points, another in overtime), is nearly as formidable as Nevada when it took down Boise State on Thanksgiving weekend last year. But Kellen Moore & Co. have only themselves to blame if they don’t bust the BCS once and for all.

No. 4 Stanford (7-0) » The Myth of Andrew Luck becomes the Legend of Andrew Luck if the Cardinal prevail at No. 20 USC this weekend and then in tricky home games against No. 7 Oregon and Notre Dame.

No. 3 Oklahoma State (7-0) » The door is open for the Cowboys to run the table in the Big 12, except for a schedule that defines the word “backloaded.” Before thinking about facing No. 10 Kansas State, No. 19 Texas Tech and No. 11 Oklahoma, hosting Baylor this weekend is a huge trap.

No. 2 Alabama (8-0) and No. 1 LSU (8-0) » The Crimson Tide and Tigers don’t meet in Tuscaloosa for another 10 days, all the more reason to treat the buildup like a Super Bowl. There’ll be a loss for somebody here, but likely not another for either team unless fate conspires to have them meet again for the BCS title in January.
