Vasquez: It’s time for Terps to step up

Maryland looks to bounce back at Florida State

Different week, same goal.

That’s the mind-set of the Terrapins as they look to earn a much-needed victory over Florida State on Saturday after suffering a demoralizing, 62-60 loss at Miami on Wednesday night. Last week, the Terrapins rallied for a win over Georgia Tech after they were upset by Morgan State at Comcast Center a few nights earlier.

The Terrapins have remained in Florida after squandering a 17-point second-half lead in a 62-60 loss to the Hurricanes, who took the lead for good on former Calvert Hall star Jack McClinton’s three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining.

“I’ve been there, Saturday coming from behind Georgia Tech,” Maryland coach Gary Williams said. “[Miami] got us. That’s a tough loss. We’ll see how we can come back against Florida State.”

The Seminoles (14-3, 1-1 ACC), who are coming off a 78-65 win at NC State, are led by guard Toney Douglas (18.5 ppg), Chris Singleton (9.2 ppg) and guard Derwin Kitchen (9.1 ppg).

The Terrapins (12-4, 1-1), who have tarnished an 11-2 start by losing two of their past three games, features four players who average at least 10 points per game, led by guard Greivis Vasquez (17.8 ppg) and forward Landon Milbourne (12 ppg).

But against the Hurricanes, the Terrapins’ three guards — Vasquez (15 points), Eric Hayes (seven) and Adrian Bowie (career-high 23) — accounted for 45 of the team’s 60 points, which can’t happen if Maryland is to defeat Florida State.

“We just got to step up in crucial times, and it’s got to be more than one guy,” Vasquez told reporters after the game. “I can’t do it by myself and Eric Hayes can’t do it by himself and Adrian Bowie, he cannot do it by himself. We need guys to step up and that’s the reality.”
