Ryan Williamsseason didn’t go as he planned, restricted by a hamstring injury. But his offseason could be working out quite well.

The Virginia Tech running back has impressed scouts and draft experts, most of whom rate him as a likely second-round choice. Though his 40-yard dash time wasn’t what he hoped for — Williams ran it in 4.58 seconds at the scouting combine — analysts have found plenty to like.

Williams rushed for 1,655 yards as a redshirt sophomore and 477 last season.

“That burst and lateral quickness and ability to get in and out of holes so quickly,” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said, “and with such great balance and vision separates him from most backs in this class.”

Williams’ time matched that of former Hokie teammate and running back Darren Evans. Ironically, Evans missed 2009 because of injuries but gained 854 yards last season and 1,265 in 2008.

“Williams gives you more flexibility,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said. “He’ll be the more coveted player.”
