Jaime Moreno, the last remaining player to play all 15 seasons of Major League Soccer and the league’s all-time leading goal scorer, has confirmed that this season will be his last on the field with D.C. United, according to multiple sources close to the player.
Moreno, who has not officially declared that he will permanently retire, hinted than an announcement was imminent while he was in Houston for the MLS All-Star game two weeks ago. D.C. United is yet to make a formal announcement.
“It’s definitely not the way that I wanted to retire,” said Moreno last month after getting selected to his eighth All-Star team. “You always have something better in mind, but at the end of the day, the team the most important thing to me. Right now, the team is not doing well so that’s the primary thing.”
The 36-year-old recently thanked his friends on Facebook and told AloBolivia.com that he would play with D.C. only through the end of year.
Moreno has been offered the chance to stay on at D.C. United as a youth coach, but he also has an offer from Blooming in Bolivia, where he began his professional career. He has not yet made a decision on his future.
