Capitals-Bruins Game 2 report card

Impact player

Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom scored the second overtime game-winning goal of this series at 2:56 of the second extra session. This time the victory went to the Caps, who blew a 1-0 third-period with under nine minutes to play but responded in overtime to tie the series.

Under the radar

On the home ice of the defending Stanley Cup champions, Caps rookie goalie Braden Holtby has held Boston to just two goals on 74 shots in two games. Washington’s defense has kept Holtby from needing to make multiple incredible saves.

Did you notice …

Some feisty play between Caps center Nicklas Backstrom and Boston center Patrice Bergeron? Neither player has a reputation as a dirty player. But that’s the playoffs.

Behind the bench

Boston coach Claude Julien continues to play Dennis Seidenberg and Zdeno Chara against Alex Ovechkin. But Chara was burned for an early penalty, and Washington’s top line scored on a rare occasion when he was on the bench.

Caps coach Dale Hunter made a subtle move to squeeze more offense from his team. Marcus Johansson moved from the third line onto a scoring line with Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin.
