Vasquez should earn ACC honor

We’re not going to waste time debating this one: Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez is the ACC player of the year. Thanks for playing, Jon Scheyer, here are some nice parting gifts.

That’s the way it should go, regardless of who wins Wednesday night’s Duke-Maryland game. Listen, we’re not big fans of Virginia Tech’s whiny coach Seth Greenberg, but he pegged this one on his radio show:

“If you put Scheyer on Maryland’s team, do they have the same record? If you put Vasquez on Duke’s team, what would their record be? … I mean, he’s playing at a high level. … I mean, it’s easy not to like him, because he’s a little wacko, but he’s a really good player.”

Vasquez has been named the ACC’s player of the week four times this season (one more than Scheyer). He’s averaging 22.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game — topping Scheyer in every category.

And, yes, Scheyer is an excellent player. But he’s also surrounded by better talent with Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler. All three average at least 17 points per game. Beyond Vasquez, the Terps have little offense. He must do more for Maryland to win.

The blog, Mr. Irrelevant, points out that 71 percent of the ACC’s player of the year winners come from the team that finishes first. We agree with their belief that it doesn’t matter this year if Maryland finishes first or second, Vasquez deserves the award.
