Former Redskin Mel Kaufman, a starter and former captain for three Super Bowl teams, died Monday in California.

The cause of death was not immediately available. Kaufman was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Kaufman, 50, played linebacker from 1981-88, and stayed with the team as a scouting supervisor.

“Mel was a tremendous football player, as well as a fine talent evaluator,” Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. “His work on the field as a player and as a coach, and as well his commitment to so many charities, were testament to how much he loved the game and the fans who cheered for him.  Our prayers go out to his family during this sad time.”
