West Springfield activities director Mike Dobson will retire at the end of the school year, according to Paul Jansen, coordinator of student activities and athletics for Fairfax County Public Schools.
Dobson has served in that capacity at West Springfield since 2002. He previously spent five years as activities director at Jefferson and was a longtime teacher, administrator and track and field coach at Centreville.
“Mike has always been a quiet guy, but when he says something among a group of administrators we listen,” said Jansen. “He’s always been a problem solver and someone who wants to know how we can do things better.”
Dobson often teamed with former T.C. Williams activities director A.K. Johnson on local track issues, at various times running both the Northern Region and Group AAA state meets at George Mason University. He was also instrumental in moving some area track meets to the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., a facility capable of handling larger events.
