Description » Executive, nine-hole, Fairfax County Park Authority course on rolling property with four ponds and some nice landscaping touches. Straight-forward layout with flat greens and no surprises.

Reasons to play »
Convenient location, excellent course for walkers, children. A nine-hole round can often be accomplished in less than two hours.

Signature hole

No. 4 » Par 4 » 335 Yards

Intimidating hole with woods to the right, water left. Fairway slopes toward water. Play safe with an iron off the tee, leaving a longer approach over water, or use driver off the tee, bringing the water into play, but also setting up a chance for a wedge approach over dry land to a large, flat green.

Best hole

No. 8 » Par 4 » 382 Yards

No. 1 handicap hole is also the prettiest with trees lining both sides of a wide fairway. The longest par-four on the course is a legitimate test with out-of-bounds left and an uphill approach that plays longer than yardage.

Worst hole

No. 3 » Par 3 » 152 Yards

Holes No. 2 and 3 run under power lines. Shifting the tee box on No. 3 has created an alley to the green, but that doesn’t make the dozen or so wires any less distracting. Jefferson doesn’t stipulate any ground rules for balls that are deflected.

Rerouted »
Jefferson was reconfigured in the early 1980s, when land was acquired and a miniature golf and lighted tennis and basketball courts were added between the course and Lee Highway. The original course was slightly longer, but just as forgiving.

Driving ambition » Long hitters will find many birdie opportunities at Jefferson, which includes three par-four holes that measure less than 300 yards. The most drivable par-four is No. 9, a 238-yarder that plays toward the clubhouse, had a wide green, no hazards, and the only trouble is in the form of scattered bushes and trees to the right.

Risk reward »
No. 5 is an odd par-five at 399 yards. Go straight up fairway and it takes three shots, playing around a stand of trees. But by ignoring the fairway, and hitting a big drive over a substantial pond on the left, players can reach the green in two.
