Where the aides have no name

No matter how big you make it in this town, you’re never bigger than Bono.

Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, whom some call one of the better wordsmiths to work at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., recently recalled the story of the time he and his wife dined with the U2 singer and his family.

After the dinner, Gerson’s wife turned to him and said, “You’re idealistic and principled like him [Bono].  But why can’t you be rich and cool too?”

The anecdote made the crowd  — gathered at the Council on Foreign Relations to toast Gerson’s latest book, “Heroic Conservatism” — burst into laughter.

Of course, Bono also doesn’t have to wear his own name tag: Gerson worked the room making sure that everyone knew that “Hi. My name is Michael Gerson.”

Bill McGurn, the new speechwriter for the president, was on hand for the party, as was former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman.
