Final day of minicamp marked by absences

Rookie tight end Fred Davis made a lasting impression this weekend. It’s not the one he wanted. The second-round pick overslept and missed the Redskins last minicamp session Sunday.

Meanwhile, safety Reed Doughty missed practice to be at the hospital with his 20-month-old son.

Davis met withRedskins coach Jim Zorn in his office after practice before heading out of town. The rookies will not participate in the organized team activities this week.

For Davis, it was not the way the Redskins wanted his week to end. To others, it’s probably not surprising.

Several league sources said they liked Davis’ talent, but did not like his character. One talent evaluator listed him among a handful of players he would not have drafted for that reason. Another said they couldn’t understand why the Redskins took him, questioning if he’d put in the necessary work to succeed.

The Redskins’ security personnel were the first to get in touch with Davis, who did not get in contact with anyone until afterward. The rookies stayed in a nearby hotel.

“I’m very disappointed,” Zorn said. “But part of this is, this will be the first time I get to deal with the situation. It’s going to come at some point. Every practice counts so he just had a setback. Hopefully everybody will learn from this lesson he’s having to learn right now about what it’s going to take to get to a place on time, to be responsible.”

As for Doughty, his son Micah had a kidney transplant in March and spiked a fever this weekend. The team gathered for a prayer before practice and the defensive backs held another one after practice. There was no word on how Doughty’s son was doing.
