In NCAA Tournament, Bimbo believes in top seeds, not history

As Bimbo sat on her golden-yellow blanket and munched worms, The Examiner?s pigskin-turned-basketball-picking princess was unfazed by history.

Who cares there has never been a year in which all four No. 1 seeds reached the Final Four since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985?

Who cares if Memphis may face second-seeded Texas in Houston?

Who cares if UCLA scored 51 points in its last game?

Who cares if Kansas hasn?t been to the Final Four in five years?

Apparently, not Bimbo.

Bimbo spent this week devouring ice cream as she basked in the glory of correctly picking eight of the 16 teams that will compete in region semifinal games the next two days.

“She has gotten more demandingas her star has grown,” said Colleen Layton-Robbins, who owns Frisky?s Wildlife & Primate Sanctuary in Woodstock.

Bimbo?s most astute choices to make it this far were West Virginia, Villanova and Louisville ? not bad for a 37-year-old who watched her first basketball games this past weekend.

“As long as she has her worms and her comfy blankets,” Layton-Robbins said, “she does pretty well.”

Bimbo continued to fill out her tournament bracket on Wednesday, picking North Carolina, Louisville, Stanford, Kansas, Davidson, UCLA, Xavier and Memphis to advance to region finals. She expects the top four seeds ? Memphis, North Carolina, UCLA and Kansas ? to head to the Final Four.

Bimbo and her best friend, Oogie, correctly predicted Georgetown would defeat UMBC in the first round. Oogie, however, threw a temper tantrum while Bimbo was making her picks on Wednesday, and had to be given popcorn so she?d settle down.

“[Bimbo] was quite the prima donna today,” Joyce Dietsch, one of Bimbo?s caretakers, said. “I think her picks were pretty OK.”
