Pete Strickland has resigned as Archbishop Spalding?s boys basketball coach without having ever coached a game, in order to accept an assistant coaching position at North Carolina State under new men?s basketball coach Sidney Lowe.
Spalding Athletic Director Lee Dove said Strickland, who was fired as Coastal Carolina?s coach in 2005, informed school officials of his decision over the weekend.
“All week last week (Strickland) was struggling with his decision,” Dove said. “I?m just appreciative of that considering he has the opportunity to coach in the ACC.”
Strickland was hired last month to replace Mike Glick, who resigned and is now the coach at Gwynn Park in Prince George?s County. Dove said Spalding?s selection committee would meet Wednesdayand look over other finalists for the position.
“We?re going to gauge the level of interest among those very qualified candidates,” Dove said. “Although we don?t think we?ll have to, we also haven?t ruled out the possibility of expanded the search beyond that if necessary.”
