Ward wars

Those D.C. Council members sure are proud of their territory. During Thursday’s news conference announcing the final deal to bring Radio One back to the District, Mayor Adrian Fenty wondered aloud whether the network’s new building was in Ward 1 or Ward 2. Getting his answer, he said, “OK, it’s technically in Ward 1.”

That was too much for Ward 1 Council Member Jim Graham, who excitedly corrected him, “It’s not technically in Ward 1, it is in Ward 1.”
Jack Evans, who represents Ward 2, then made sure to note, “Well, it used to be Ward 2.”
“Well, it used to be in Maryland,” protested Graham.
Later, Evans asked the crowd to give Gov. Martin O’Malley a round of applause for raising taxes in Maryland, all the better to lure businesses to D.C. But then Evans dropped the real bombshell. Last week, he said, “I put on my coat and hat and went to the 9:30 Club.”
(“In Ward 1!” Graham made sure to chime in.)
So what was the act that drew Evans across the border to his neighboring ward? That would be Super Diamond, “Alternative Neil Diamond Experience.”
Turn on your heart light, Jack.
