Dwayne De Rosario’s offseason raised move him into the top 10 player salaries in Major League Soccer, according to figures released by the Major League Soccer Players Union on Friday.
De Rosario, who negotiated a new deal with D.C. United during the offseason after earning MLS MVP honors last year, will earn a base salary of $617,857 in 2012. The figures released by the union also average a total of players’ annual guaranteed bonuses, putting De Rosario’s total compensation this year at $663,190.
United midfielder Branko Boskovic is 16th with a base of $409,167 ($545,367 guaranteed), and Hamdi Salihi is 24th, at $305,460 ($487,460 guaranteed). Boskovic’s contract expires the middle of July, it was clarified this week, not the end of June.
D.C.’s other biggest offseason raise went to defender Brandon McDonald, who jumped from $45,000 last season to $220,000 this year ($258,250 guaranteed), a pretty strong enticement for the center back to stay in Washington rather than test the market overseas. He is United’s highest paid American.
At the other end of the team spectrum, United has gotten great value this season from defender Daniel Woolard, who will earn $56,250 this year, along with goalkeeper Bill Hamid ($70,000 base, $84,750 guaranteed) and rookie of the year candidate Nick DeLeon ($44,000/79,000).
Notably, United parted ways in the offseason with Clyde Simms, who earned $173,250 last season. Simms landed with New England, where his base salary this season is $70,000. D.C. replaced Simms, more or less, with Marcelo Saragosa. Saragosa’s salary: $75,000.
