Player of the Year
Eber Martinez
Gar-Field, junior, midfield/forward
The key element of the Indians’ resurgence this season, Martinez finished with 20 goals and 11 assists. Strong, skilled and able to deliver precise balls over long distance, Martinez bent in a spectacular free kick for Gar-Field’s only goal in the Group AAA state final. The Parade All-American and Cardinal District co-player of the year also scored four goals against Landstown in the state quarterfinals.
Coach of the Year
Mark Markiewicz, Gar-Field
In his first season, Markiewicz brought the perfect combination guidance and understanding to the Indians, finding a true connection with a talented team that only one season before had been plagued by suspensions, desertions, and ultimately the resignation of then-coach Gianni Grimaldi. Markiewicz led the Indians (19-3) to a Cardinal District title and their first ever Group AAA state final before losing to repeat champion Thomas Dale in overtime.
First team
Guil Costa
Lake Braddock, senior, forward
A fearless and often flamboyant attacker, the Patriot District and Northern Region player of the year could line up in the midfield or as a forward. Costa finished the year with 15 goals and six assists. Will play for Drexel.
Joe Barnd
W.T. Woodson, junior, forward
With a deft touch and a nose for goal, the All-Northern Region pick emerged from former Examiner Player of the Year Michael Lahoud’s shadow as the region champions’ most dangerous weapon, scoring 19 goals and adding six assists.
Pat Barthold
Westfield, senior, forward
Repeat All-Examiner striker is quick off the mark and deadly in front of the goal, tallying 22 goals and 11 assists. The field general for the Bulldogs the past two seasons, Barthold will play at Cincinnati this fall.
Tyler Mishalow
Robinson, senior, midfield/forward
Mishalow made the Rams’ move to the Concorde District a great one, leading his team to the district title before falling in a 4-3 thriller to West Springfield in the Northern Region quarterfinals. The Maryland-bound attacker scored 10 goals and had seven assists.
A.J. Sheta
Westfield, sophomore, midfield
The youngest member of the All-Examiner team was crucial to the Bulldogs success — Westfield lost the only regular-season game in which Sheta didn’t play. A free kick specialist, Sheta distributes and scores, finishing with 12 goals and 11 assists.
Alex Silver
Forest Park, senior, midfield
A vocal and confident leader, Silver (five goals, 16 assists), the Cardinal District co-player of the year with Martinez, led the Bruins to six straight shutouts to open the season, including a penalty kick for the only goal in a 1-0 win over Prince William County archrival Osbourn Park. Will play for Old Dominion.
Cameron Petty
Osbourn Park, senior, midfield
Shouldering the responsibility of both possessing the ball and orchestrating the attack, the Cedar Run District player of theyear had 11 goals and nine assists in leading the Yellow Jackets to their third straight district title. Will play for American.
Matt Weiler
Lake Braddock, senior, defender
A perennial pick, Weiler makes his fourth All-Examiner appearance. The area’s best defender and top two-way player had just two goals and five assists, but he never stopped working at either end of the field for the Patriot District champions. Will play for Kentucky.
Ryan Rudzinski
Langley, senior, defender
Despite an early-season foot injury, Rudzinski returned midway through to the year to help the Saxons rally and capture a second straight Liberty District title. Tough and great in the air, Rudzinski plans to walk on at Georgetown.
Scott Levine
W.T. Woodson, senior, defender
A tireless worker and organizer in the back, Levine helped the Cavaliers get back to the Group AAA state tournament and do the one thing they hadn’t in 2005, capture a Northern Region title. Had three assists and a game-winning goal in the state quarterfinals against Clover Hill.
Dan Williams
Lake Braddock, senior, Goalkeeper
Repeat All-Examiner selection was once again the area’s most formidable netminder. Fearless off his line and strong in the air, the Kentucky-bound Williams notched 12 shutouts and allowed more than one goal only twice.
