Former Gilman stars preparing for pro careers

Stan White Jr. followed in his father?s footsteps when he decided to play college football at Ohio State. Now he may get the chance to follow his father again ? sort of, anyway.

White worked out with the Baltimore Ravens last week at fullback, and the Baltimore native is trying to convince an NFL team to take a chance on him in the upcoming draft this weekend. White?s father, Stan Sr., also played pro football in Baltimore, but as a linebacker with the Colts from 1972 to ?79. He is currently a member of the Ravens? radio broadcast team.

The younger White said he has spoken with about a half-dozen teams, but is not sure which teams have the most interest. He said he?s just enjoying the process, but added that playing for the Ravens would be a dream come true.

“Ever since the Ravens came to town in 1996,” White said, “what else as a young kid do you want to do than play football for your hometown team. … But it?s not about having every team like you; it?s just about having one team like you and maybe two so one of them feels a need to draft you.”

White Jr. displayed a great deal of versatility in his college career, switching from linebacker to fullback early in his career and also playing some special teams, something vital for any player hoping to be selected in the latter rounds. Hewas mainly used as a blocking back, but he showed the ability to run and catch when called upon, catching eight passes for 57 yards as a senior.

White Sr. said he feels his son can play in the NFL and just hopes a team gives him that chance, especially if it?s the Ravens, who lost fullback Ovie Mughelli to free agency.

“I would love to see him play in Baltimore, but I just want to see him find the right situation,” White Sr. said.

Another former Gilman star, Victor Abiamiri, is hoping for the right situation this weekend. The 6-foot-4, 267-pound defensive end had 43 tackles and 10.5 sacks last season at Notre Dame. He also worked out with the Ravens this week.

White Sr. said he expects Abiamiri to be a selected on the first day of the draft and have a long NFL career.
