Beamer’s Hokies have been chokies

If you are a Virginia Tech fan, are you down after Boise State’s comeback in the final two minutes to beat the Hokies at FedEx Field on Monday night? Sure.

Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be.

The best example comes as recently as the 2007 season — when the team lost three games to top-10 teams — two after leading in the fourth quarter.

That year against Boston College, the Hokies were up 10-0 entering the fourth quarter. And that same score stood until BC quarterback Matt Ryan engineered two long touchdown drives in the final three minutes of the game for a 14-10 victory.

Unfortunately, as much success as Frank Beamer has brought Virginia Tech since being on the verge of getting canned after a 2-8-1 season in 1992, he’s provided just as much heartbreak.

The stats were out there before and after the Boise State game. Virginia Tech is 0-22 against teams in the AP top 5 away from Lane Stadium. And under Beamer, the Hokies are 6-28 against top-10 teams regardless of the venue (according to Hokiesports.com).

Beamer is a great story for the program: He gives back to the school’s library, he’s an alumni football player who played in two bowl games himself and he’s a very likable figure.

But with the coach in his 24th season at the Blacksburg school and his 8-9 record in bowl games, how much longer will this go on? Even Bobby Bowden was forced out at Florida State this past year despite two national championships.
